Goldendoodles are a designer breed of dog that is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle (originally). Widespread breeding started in the 1990’s and expanded to utilize miniature and toy poodles. Goldendoodles can vary widely in size from 15-80lbs depending on the parents. One reason this breed became so popular is because they were thought to be hypoallergenic. This is not a true characteristic; however, the curlier doodles do have less dander and shed less than standard Golden Retrievers. This also means that these dogs typically need to be groomed frequently.

Because these dogs are cross breeds, their behavior can vary widely. Based on genetic theory, a well-bred dog should have traits similar that that of both parents. Predominately, these dogs are high energy, loyal, trustworthy, and trainable. There was a behavioral study done in 2019 that showed Goldendoodles displayed greater dog rivalry – dog directed aggression and stranger directed fear than purebred Golden Retrievers or Poodles. While we are a fan of DOGS – period – it is always important to consider the needs and characteristics of the breed you are welcoming into your home.
